Abstract
Why is it that deaf people seem to have much less trouble communicating with people who use other (sign) languages than hearing people? Several explanations have been proposed for this common observation: sign languages are more alike than spoken languages, sign languages lend themselves better to creative or innovative communication, and deaf people are more experienced in communicating in difficult circumstances. In this lecture I will explore these various hypotheses, and report on our initial studies to investigate what is often called ‘international sign’ or ‘cross-signing’. These studies address one-on-one interactions between deaf people from the Netherlands and deaf people from Belgium and China, but also interpreting into international sign in conference settings. Examples from both areas of study will be presented and discussed, along with the consequences that this may have for language policies in international organisations like the UN and WFD.

Bio: Onno Crasborn defended his doctoral dissertation in 2001 at Leiden University, a study on phonetic variation in Sign Language of the Netherlands. In 2002, he moved to Radboud University, where he has been full professor of Sign Language of the Netherlands since 2017. Crasborn has published widely on the linguistic study of Sign Language of the Netherlands, covering areas like prosody, information structure, non-manual markers, and lexical phonology. In the last 15 years, he has helped develop the field of sign language corpora and lexical databases, working on corpus methodologies like transcription and annotation. The development of ELAN functionality for sign language linguistics formed an important part of that. In 2008, the Corpus NGT was the first open access corpus of a sign language in the world. At present, his research group is completing a longitudinal data collection of sign language acquisition. In 2017, he was awarded a prestigious VICI grant by the Netherlands Organisation of Scientific Research, to investigate international communication between deaf people.
